U.S. President-elect Donald Trump held his first in-person meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr president of Ukraine Zelensky since the U.S. election. The discussion, which took place in Paris on the sidelines of the Notre-Dame cathedral reopening ceremony, was described by both leaders as productive and centered on finding a just resolution to the war in Ukraine.

Key Discussions on Peace

The meeting, which lasted 35 minutes, was also attended by French President Emmanuel Macron, who played a pivotal role in arranging the talks. Zelensky emphasized the urgency of ending the war, stating, “We all want this war to end as soon as possible and in a just way. We spoke about our people, the situation on the ground, and a just peace.”

The Ukrainian president further highlighted their shared commitment to ongoing collaboration, adding, “Peace through strength is possible.”

Macron’s Role in Diplomatic Talks

Macron, known for his diplomatic finesse, ensured that Europe remained a key player in the negotiations. According to Nicolas Tenzer, a French expert on Russia, Macron’s presence underscored Europe’s desire to have a seat at the negotiating table, especially as concerns grow about the possibility of the U.S. striking a deal directly with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Macron later shared on X (formerly Twitter), “United States, Ukraine, and France. Together on this historic day. United for Notre-Dame. Let’s continue to work together for peace and security.”

Trump’s Peace Plan and Controversy

Trump, who has previously pledged to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict within 24 hours of his January 20 inauguration, has floated controversial ideas. Some of his officials have hinted at potential territorial concessions to Russia as a pathway to peace.

While standing outside the Élysée Palace with Macron, Trump addressed the broader challenges, remarking, “It certainly seems like the world is going a little crazy right now. And we’ll be talking about that.”

High-Stakes Diplomacy Amid French Political Turmoil

Macron’s government, however, faced its own challenges. Amid a no-confidence vote against his prime ministerial pick, Michel Barnier, Macron is leading a caretaker government. Despite domestic political instability, Macron remained focused on strengthening Europe’s position in global diplomacy.

Prince William Joins Diplomatic Conversations

In addition to meeting Zelensky, Trump also had a 40-minute private conversation with Prince William at the residence of the British ambassador in Paris. Trump commended the Prince of Wales, stating, “He’s doing a fantastic job.”

Next Steps for U.S.-Ukraine Relations

Zelensky’s chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, has been dispatched to the U.S. to engage with both Trump’s transition team and the current administration. This move highlights Kyiv’s determination to ensure continued American support.

With global eyes on the unfolding dynamics, the meeting in Paris marks a significant moment in the ongoing efforts to resolve the Ukraine war. Both leaders expressed optimism, signaling potential progress in the months ahead.
